My intention is to connect readings from Mchulan, (mainly chapter two) to my project and my research, and then connect them to Kim’s case study in order to assume a secondary investigator roll, and finally embark on a final project geered towards establishing the effects of a media hypmotized youth on spirituality, morality, community involvement, health, wellbeing, and political awareness in adulthood.  Finally I plan to prepare a recommendation for Shoshana Shay, and other educational leaders, parents, teachers, activists to promote free thought, media literacy, and the capacity for media resistance in our youth..

In chapter two Mchulan describes the difference between hot and cool media.  He describes hot media as those that are full of information and data, requiring low participation and leaving little to be filled in, and cool media as those requiring more audience participation for completion.  My intent with my research is to connect the concept of hot and cool media (high and low participation) to ideas of allegiance, symbolism, religion, politics, and media control/obsession in modern American culture.  Mchulan explores the idea that cultures that are less technological are more likely to understand the whirlwind of media we find ourselves lost in daily.  PROVES A NEED TO BREAK FREE AND THE ADVANTAGE OF AN OUTSIDERS PERSPECTIVE, OR FRAME OF MIND.   I have found Mchulan’s thoughts promote a discovery is knowledge perspective, and this can be applied to education devoted to developing beliefs, not by shopping for, and labeling ourselves with beliefs and ideologies, instead by discovering them through resistance of media, propaganda, constraining dogma, and the choicelessness of nationalism.  Mchulan serves as a resource in that his clear explanation of media as extentions of human mind and body functions create a path to understanding that not only do we have a choice in the matter, but that the alternative is a zombie like existence.   while we can exersise our minds eye, develop our cognitive abilities, and create remarkable pathways by reading a book, there is an illusion IN OUR SOCIETY that we can aquire the same knoledge by watching the movie. This illusion can be interpreted as a representation of American culture AS A PREPACKAGED MIND NUMBING DEAL, that is unhealthy for the development of today’s youth.

My case study reviews the deceptive nature of the media in relation to advertising, allegiance, sybols, flags, and nationalism.  My investigation of the RPF serves as an example of the kind of outlet healthy for development and free thought, highlighting the lack of political or religious affiliation involved.  My research provides a window into the deceptive and unhealthy qualities I describe.

ARTICLES FOR DISCUSSION

First…

"Pall of Orthodoxy": The Insidious Persistence of Loyalty Oaths

By Marjorie Heins

Begins with example of American Studies teacher in California, WHO ALLIGNS HER  supports Pacifist beliefs.  Loyalty oath required by state constitution of all public employees.  Oath says that we will defend the constitutions of US and cali against enemies.  Refusing to sign the Oath cost teacher her job. THE ARTICLE ASKS  What’s the point for government workers who’s jobs have nothing to do with national security or government policy (firefighters, teachers, office workers ect.  Oath ritual supports political conformity in order to avoid hassle or acquire employment.  Symbolic gestures of loyalty “squelch political dissent”   This relates to Mchulan’s chapter 2 in that our political beliefs can be as uninformed and activityless as signing a form or reciting a phrase, and we feel comfortable with this.  This low participation grants us a sense of political belonging and belief,  as does in some cases dogmatic practices grant us a feeling of religious and spiritual belonging. AS OPPOSED TO DISCOVERING FOR OURSELVES  To relate my investigation of allegiece, WHICH MY CASE STUDY DESCRIBES AS is a duty of fidelity said to be owed by a subject or citizen to his or her state or sovereign. The word "owed" in this context evokes a feeling of not only guilt, but choicelessness. This concept seems to render us choiceless in regards to supporting a society obsessed with symbols, consumerism, accessability and the regressive properties of electronic media.  THIS OATH ARTICLE IS A LITERAL EXAMPLE OF GOVERNMENT ENFORCED CHOICELESSNESS AGAINST ALEGIANCE.

Smith, MARK.K.  "Happiness and education- theory, practice and possibility" The encyclopedia of informal education. 2005.

In the article Smith gives an in depth definition of human happiness. GIVES US STATISTICAL DETERMINERS OF HAPPINESS.   He then weaves psycological perspectives of how we attain personal and collective happiness.  He presents the opinion that in an economic and consumer driven society, education is supporting the consumerism that has a negative effect on his definition of happiness.  He discussus our tendancy to choose material wealth over the aspects of life we know will bring us joy, and concludes by calling upon educational leaders to change this.  He presents statistics of an unhappy society in the midst of more and more economic wealth.  In a market society people choose income over companionship.  Dynamics of consumerism and power of advertising support distorted decision making, and resistence is difficult.  People choose paths contrary to their own well-being.  Is this because we are given the illusion by the media extentions of our happiness?      Electronic entertainment, especially television, has profoundly privatized leisure time. The time we spend watching television is a direct drain upon involvement in groups and social capital building activities.”  WHICH HE SAYS ARE CONTRIBUTERS TO HAPPINESS

Rampton, Sheldon.  "Has the internet changed the propaganda model?" Center for media and democracy. May 22, 2007

Discusses "Manufacturing Consent,"  a book by Noam Chomsky and Ed Herman, intended to analyze how mass media and public opinion are molded in democracy.   Rampton  compares the relevancy the book written in 1988 has in todays society with respect to media generated propaganda.  In depth discussion of American mainstream media portrayal of the Iraq war is presented.  Discussions of how Chomsky and Herman's "five filters" work to perpetuate propaganda in a democratic society, and how their ideas of media control without regards to the internet relate to the present time where the internet is a major distributer of advertising, news, and according to the article decision influencing propaganda.

Yates, B.L. Media literacy: A health education perspective.  Journal of Health Education 1999.

The article presents examples of both positive and negative influence of media over society.  The main focus is the negative aspects, and how they relate to health issues among adolecents.  Nutrition, health, substance abuse, stress, and violence are some of the main issues discussed.  Media literacy is offered as the weapon against a negatively influenced youth.

CONNECTING TO MY CASE STUDY

In my investigation I learned how media magnetically attach themselves to the power of nationalistic symbols, and other symbols of belonging like religious symbols, and entertainment as representations of desired images, I NOTICE THAT our obsessions our profitible. The media created need for allegiance can be exploited and marketed with ease.

THE RPF HAS ME  inspired by the idea of peace transcending any sort of human classification, political agenda, media advertising or nationalistic rhetoric, and realizing that resistance of these things in itself is peaceful.  This is the motivation to employ recommendations, or create a new organization, or advise youth oriented programs on resistance of propaganda, and recognition of censorship.  FURTHERMORE, TO ENCOURAGE ACTIVE PARTICIPATION IN DISCOVERING BELIEFS.

KIM CONNECT

The way that Kim has molded her thesis into an investigation of ethics, religion, and politics with relation to charities is PERFECT TO CONNECT.  Our quest is similar in that my project began with an interest in the way structured and partisen worlds of politics and religion coexist with a more fluid, accepting concept or practice of morality SUCH AS THE (radiant peace foundation).  It is interesting to think that the institutions of politics and religion work in society as both dictators and barriers of morality.  Imagine all the exciting ideas that could emerge from an investigation of religious propaganda as portrayed through the media now and historically.  Both MEDIA AND RELIGION can connect, inspire, transcend, and promote cooperation, and both can separate, zombie-ify and create friction.  .   I am interested in Kim's ideas about what will create a contented society WITH REGARDS TO BOTH OF OUR RESEARCH ON HAPPINESS.  Does happiness exist in a dull, group-think, numbered existence?  What makes people choose to buy in, wave flags, fall in line, pick a side?  What blinds people to the idea that our images of perfection and happiness are literally sold to us?  Jumping to my discussions on children and the need to "turn it off", how does health and wellness  relate to dogma, politics, and the media that distribute these?  Kim rhetorical use of the first amendment AND THE OATH ARTICLE conjurs up thoughts about government and polital control over both religious belief, and media outlets. IT IS IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND how society supports or declines this control is in order, and how these decisions affect our society's and our youth's wellbeing (or illusion of wellbeing).  FOR THESE REASONS I HAVE DECIDED TO  Finally I plan to prepare a recommendation for Shoshana Shay, and other educational leaders, parents, teachers, activists to promote free thought, media literacy, and the capacity for media resistance in our youth..

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT KIMS PROJECT Kim creates a path to understanding dogma vs religion.  To connect some Mchulan,  a love for an ideology (religion) posseses a kind of "cool medium" identity filled with potential for discovery and growth, where as literal dogmatic practice posses a more "high definition" identity, filled with mind numbing, systematic robotism.  Kim's statistics allude to this.

CONNECTING TO KIM I can feel my focus drifting towards a "break the cycles" type of research.  Our society seems to promote a pre-packaged version of identity as a means to fullfilment.  Our spiritual, ethical, and political beliefs are like presents from the media.  When we open them up we find a box full of labels (symbols)  we can stick to ourselves, and then concentrate on other, obviously more pressing issues.   Kim's research on David Wallace and his ideas of "the default setting"  give me a new angle for research, and a closer view of my audience.  The "easy path" is so relateable to my rantings on nationalism and society, and are helping to steer my interest towards discovering the means to breaking these cycles early in our youth.
