Open Source Education

Youtub.com: "Richard Baraniuk: Goodbye, textbooks; hello, open-source learning"

Upon searching you tube for open source on education, I came across Richard Baraniuk’s speech. What I have basically found in the discussion threads are people with their many opinions. It seems that everyone knows everything. As the words lack facial expression, I am very tempted to say that I have witnessed an online argument amongst many people. How would I even begin to enter this discussion? I simply wouldn’t! But for the sake of this exercise or “game” I would ignore some outbursts and agree with others. ...

Connexions is a wonderful new and growing site that will allow us to have any book under our fingertips. This new movement benefits the growing number of students as it is free, and it certainly helps our planet by not having its trees cut down for production. The design of this site let’s people collaborate and learn together. This of course wouldn’t benefit the industries that are ripping their consumers off by charging ridiculous prices.

For the students that are having a hard time keeping up with the rising tuition and textbook costs, Connextions would be a place that would provide an outlet for financial burden. Professors would be able to load up particular segments of their textbooks and also share other course material that would save the students time and help alleviate the financial stress.

Our Mother Nature would be pleased to know that many of its trees would not be cut down for production of paper that goes into creating textbooks. This would help with the global repair that is being recognized everywhere throughout the world. Every tree counts! In connection to this site, we could start a website that would count the paper and therefore trees saved by having electronic books, then plant a tree for every tree saved to show how important this movement really is.

As much as this website would benefit all walks of life by us coming together to learn from each other, I would imagine that the bookstores and authors won’t be as thrilled as their profits would plummet drastically. It will be very interesting to see how far this website will grow and if there will be any fights to shut it down.

Yes, Aldijana! You can read about the emergence of the Connexions project in Two Bits, Chris Kelty's text about the Free Software Movement (which we happen to be reading this text in ENC 4260/6421 this semester, right here on this wiki!). We can look at your blog in class and discuss, together, ways we might and could expand on your reasoning, and grow an essay in the process.
