Case Study ELECTIVE

Page history last edited by SapphireSeven 15 years, 2 months ago

"Creating is a very solitary act, and it's very lonely, and you think no one is going to here you, until someone does, and then they do, and then you'll worry the next time. What's keep you alive is creativity. That's the life force. It's what keeps you alive. You must not ever allow that to leave you." -Goldie Hawn on Bravo with James Lipton

Then I do not understand the reason for government taking out arts, number one when budgets are cut. It's because if the FCAT, but government writes the FCAT, so what is happening to our youth. We cannot stand for this. Something has to be done. Creativity has always been my outlet, yes sometimes solitary and mostly lonely, but I love what my mind comes up with. I love sharing with people, even though they never understand my thoughts, they are glad to listen because they care about me. Few connect on my level, what rare bliss is this for me, to hear someone repeat my thoughts, widdle my consciousness.

"Witness your behavior and feelings, those will change, as everything does." -Goldie hawn

I wish you sun in summer days and voice to sing a love song. Health. Happiness. Trust. A fire inside to keep you warm. A lighthouse through the hail. You are as unique as a thousand snowflakes. The sweetness of pink lemonade. It may take a lifetime. Create regardless. Keep dreaming inside your heart. Life is great. Start going now. Always confidently dream. Take care of me, take care of you. The reason is right. Choose to stay. Love them. Believe stuff is simple. Brains will walk. Souls will love. Eyes glow like the bright wing of the moon. Spirit alive. Root your feet in action. Realize to take care of tasks with each other. Strengthened by the birds. Today, the day of inspiration. There and here. There is the light. There is the love. There is the dream. For me to say I am lucky means that so many people are without. I don't want this. I don't want to make distinction. Keep dreaming. Keep building. Thank God for the gift of Academy Prep. So many things need doing, large and small. It's not enough to keep your house clean. You must demand the city is clean as well.

ELECTIVES

Children learn to share and play fair. Their minds are open to creative possibilities.

Sketching in Art Class

"Everybody can make a remix." -Dr. Trey Conner

So yo yo yo. I want to remix electives.

Rap Master Electives

See the kids they come along, they scream and they shout. Don't know what to do, what's life all about?

Put them in a room with a brush and some paint. Masterpieces so good to shock you, you'll faint.

The problem is some kids don't have an option to take art. They have never been exposed to Van Gogh or Mozart.

And then these kids are living next to you and across from me, screaming for a way to express themselves, be free.

Since they don't learn how within public school, they learn from their friends and spray paint buildings after school.

This is against the law and indeed they get arrested. All they ever wanted was a means of expression.

Cause you can lock a lion up in a cage, but imaginative spirit grows expansively with age.

The more a child learns, the more they'll help out. Inventive in the classroom helps out society.

Anything artistic is bought by you and me.

Stick Figure Electives: Would you want A or B in your community?

A community is a group of people living together in a particular place or area. A community is gathered in commonality, a fellowship formed from sharing similar interests. The world would be nice with educated, multiple-talented people running to and fro. Some children though are not given the option of learning a state-of-the art unconventional skill, such as pottery or silk dying. These children, lacking electives, will not comfortably function in as many scenarios as those children who are offered a wide variety of electives. Children with a range of skills can better adapt to a new environment: with more experience, there is more to say; they can function in a greater number of communities. Stick figure A attends public school. Stick figure B attends private school. We live in the same community: school, city, state, country, continent, planet earth.

Public school children are at a disadvantage to private school children because the amount of electives offered. This illustration--pirate ship below--gives a better example. The top deck is public school, the middle is Academy Prep, and the lower is private school. You can clearly see the vast difference in elective offerings between the three. All these children receive basic academic classes: math , reading, writing, history, science. This is not enough to create a well-rounded child. Children must be introduced to new ideas, test their skills, try it out to see if they like it. The downside of public school education is lack of electives provided.

Public schools receive funding from the government through taxes, and this is what they can afford to offer their students. Monroe Middle School is located in Tampa, Florida. Monroe does not offer an art program. Has art ever been offered? Guidance counselor, Donna Grace, replies, “The school offered it when they had an art teacher and even then, art was only offered as a sixth grade elective.” What is the reason for removing the art teacher? Grace responds, “More teachers equals more funds. Funds that we do not have.” George Bush cut $3 billion from education & Monroe lost its art program. Now, the 779 students in attendance have a mere 4 electives to choose from: computer business, career discovery, orchestra & band. For real...sixth, seventh & eighth graders are supposed to pick their careers right now? If they choose to be artists, the school has no program to nurture their growth. Ms. Grace states, “Everybody likes to see art in the classroom. We are lucky to even have music.”

Private schools are funded from families and unsystematic donations, and this is what they can afford to offer their students. Incarnation Catholic School is located in Tampa, Florida. The Art teacher, Ms. Hand, normally incorporates art history with hands-on experience. Supplies are provided and the budget is small. In an interview with Carolina Goslee, principal, she states, “Ms. Hand asked the students to tell me about Van Gogh and all the little hands went up; they could tell me different things about his life. Then, Ms. Hand made an art gallery of the children’s Van Gogh reproductions. It was just amazing, what everyone could do, everybody gets art class every week." Students have a selection of clubs to chose from. Click here for interview minutes.

Academy Prep Center is a school serving as the bridge between public and private school education. Children attending Academy Prep must be devoted to their schoolwork. Students clean the school for an hour after school every day. Parents must volunteer fifty hours a month, trading time for their child's tuition. A family must prove they too poor to pay private school tuition, so the child must qualify for Florida's Free or Reduced Lunch Program. Poor children are taken out of their ghetto's and given a free private school quality education. Private school quality means that class sizes are small, parents are involved, teachers are motivating and inspire thought outside the box, and an array of electives are offered for students to discover untapped abilities. Academy Prep may be helping the education divide tighten. What is this Academy Prep place? Click the green link below for a profile of the school.

Academy Prep Center of Tampa: Background Information

Academy Prep Oak Tree, Mission!

Here is a story about my exploratory process of Academy Prep.

Academy Prep takes public school children and gives them the opportunity to achieve their greatest academic goals. There is no lack of electives at Academy Prep. Academy Prep is the bridge between private school and public school education.

Rich's Study relates to mine because education is addressed: http://pilotingpedagogies.pbwiki.com/Rich4?SearchFor=dual+language&sp=2 Although my paper focuses on middle school and his focus's on elementary. We both talk about funding for poor families. We talk about free and reduced lunch program qualifications. A student from a four-person household in Florida with annual household income less than $27,560 is eligible for free lunches. We look through the educational perspective.

Patti's Study relates to mine because we were both trying to find a center between poor and rich. She focus's on health care and I focus on education and electives. We are similar though because Academy Prep is a Center and she hopes to create a Center. Sweet! Check it out http://pilotingpedagogies.pbwiki.com/Dr+Robinson%27s+Robin+Hood+FINAL?SearchFor=patti+robin+hood&sp=1

Felesha's relates to mine because she is also trying to bridge a gap. Her gap is between younger and older people meeting at the center of technology. Mine is rich and poor meeting at the center of elective offerings for students. http://pilotingpedagogies.pbwiki.com/Felesha%27s+Final+Draft?SearchFor=felesha+pancakes&sp=4

Solutions

We are not machines. We must be as educated as possible. To be as smart as possible. To make the best decisions, for the greater good, of our world, and especially, our patriotism towards this country.

It’s funny. While in high school, I was studying for the SAT. My SAT teacher informed me that, the SAT Administration, is going to remove words from the test because some kids don’t, know them; they’ve never experienced them, or heard them. Words such as canoeing, volleyball, mountain climbing, bike riding. I, was so, shocked, and confused, and upset after hearing her say that. I could not believe, that I had been living my world, in such, a bubble. That I didn’t know. That no one ever told me. I didn’t know to even search, even look, for differences, that exist, so close, to my home. Students in neighboring schools who have never seen, a kayak. Never, had the opportunity to strum a guitar, or sing into a microphone. Students that are not given the opportunity to grab a paint brush, and have at it on a canvas.

Somebody needs, or we need to teach these chi, I, I, I couldn’t believe that...I could, I mean, we need, these children need to learn them. My words, these words flowing out, were jumbled, from this indecipherable meaning.

Instead of removing these words off the SAT, my, by goodness, teach them than! Put an extra curricular activity in...there’s a recommendation:

Each school, in a public school district, Hillsborough County for example, which is in Tampa, Florida, for instance. If we had, twenty public schools, there is, easily, twenty different electives for them to choose from. At least offering one school, one elective, is more beneficial than offering, non at all.

Communication is key.

If Child A, going to school A, takes, a pottery class.

And if Child B, at school B, takes, a sewing class.

Child A, and, Child B, could communicate, with one another, what it’s all, about. They will learn from one another, to form a more, educated society.

These communities can also be formed online.

Using technology, using technological advancements, these children can log on, so easily, and communicate with one another, what they learn in school.

That can go into the curriculum of, the pottery, and the sewing class. That the last five minutes of every day, each students logs on, similar to a BB model of education used in college, which these children...will need to learn to learn to exist in a college environment, and report, what they learned, in class that day.

The teacher can also post pictures. Post instructions. Post class agendas. That way, these children have something to do with their spare time. They have a way, as well, of learning, about the vast possibilities and the vast options that exist in this world. On planet earth.

An example for an English teacher: Instead of reciting a play in class, have students act out roles, creating a mini-classroom production. If the school does not offer drama or theater, here's a great way to get in an acting fix. This is a simple goal to reach, teachers should use their imaginations to make the classroom more interactive.

A few more examples: Science teachers have students draw out the periodic table of elements. History teachers make up a song to memorize the Preamble.

Supplies This is a great idea for public schools to create on their website. Create a wish list. Get the word out! "Hello...we want children to be creative, help us out, donate some supplies!

At this point, not all students can attend Academy Prep, but public school teachers can find innovative ways to spark the imaginative mind of their students. Put electives into curriculum classes! I would like to investigate further and help teachers enhance academic classes creatively. Concluding with a portfolio for teachers to refer for resourceful project tips. Electives are the way students find who they are, what they like to do, and express themselves freely!

On the one hand, children walk the path of comfort and appeal. On the other hand, children walk amongst the city falling to pieces.
