3 Modules on Clear Writing Style

3 modules on clear writing style relates that the writer should lead with a clear subject and follow immediately with a descriptive verb. I remember being told that your verbs make your writing interesting. I noticed that the article used "we" many times as the subject in many sentences that had been rewritten as "clearer." Obviously this makes the meaning clearer, and less "stuffy." However, I was struck with the realization that when we (English teachers) are teaching lower level writing students; ie: comp. I and below, we don't want them to write in anything other than 3rd person. Students will often fail a final writing exam because they have written in a form other than 3rd person. Perhaps we need to rethink our teaching methods of writing. I am teaching a Basic Writing Lab filled with students right out of high school who can't compose a decent paragraph to save their life. What is the public school system doing????? Does the blame rest fully with the public school system? We need something because I'm hearing it again and again from comp teachers that students entering college can't write. I would love to take this wiki and design a class using it to teach writing. I'm not secure in my knowledge of the wiki yet to do so, and I'm not sure St. Pete. College would be on board with the idea. Also, since I'm only an adjunct, I'm sure the idea wouldn't fly, but perhaps eventually, when I get hired to a full time position, I'll be able to make use of this idea. We definitely need a paradigm shift in education full stop, and writing is a good place to start.
