20 Oct 2008 Academy Prep

Page history last edited by SapphireSeven 15 years, 6 months ago

Education hasn't always been important to farming towns. What's the reason poor children's parents didn't attend college? Di they graduate high school? What's the reason?

I am happy to see children grow, what effect are other children having on our community? I want to know where they go.

Grade 8 smaller than 5,6,7 because bad apples are thrown back to public school. They will not waste time on students who repeatedly rebel.

Classes capped at 15.

There is much talk about advancing community.

-Recycle bins visibly next to waste bins.

-List of accepted and rejected recycling items in classrooms.

-Newspaper articles about Presidential elections posted on bulletin boards (awareness).

-Achievements of preceding graduates on display.

Apartments for Americorps teachers. After Bachelor's received. Devote 1-2 years, giving back to community. Rent, electricity, cable, water paid for. Medical insurance. Laundry. Full kitchen. Parking space. $80 food check bi-weekly. $178 weekly. After year, $4,400 toward post schooling. No bills. Save.

Walking up staircase see pictures of students. Family feel.

Ms. Guitierez, "We were forced to kick them out, two girls, sisters. They have an angry mother. The girls would bring this anger to the classroom, lashing out with negative remarks. I watched the ripple effect, mood changes to sass. We had many parent-teacher conferences, phone calls home, meetings with Head of School, so many attempts to correct the issues. Their bad attitudes did not improve." Students who do not perform are expelled.

If they only understood the great opportunity Prep provides.

Teachers are motivated.

Students want to be there.

Well rounded curriculum.

Involved parents.

Three buildings. Original structure stands beside a 100 year old Grand Oak and house the main office, art studio, library, computer lab, science lab, technology lab, auditorium, kitchen, and cafeteria. Students eat lunch under Oak. Paved courtyard with Oak tree symbol. Paver art. Students are acorns, scattered about to spread and grow into mighty Oak.

Physical education and nutrition, health and wellness reinforced. Garden to grow food and track progress. Cultivating land is amazing. Cucumber, tomatoes, pumpkin, corn, parsley, onion, to name a few.

Students have snack and activity after school, prevent trouble in streets.

College like courses with students changing rooms every period. Preparation for real life.

Thirteen computers: excel, power point, word, typing, HTML.

Home computers provided.

Library: check out and return books, classification system.
